MORE BLOODHOUND INFORMATION
►Bloodhounds do NOT bark. The noise sounds like a howl but is called a BAY.
►Bloodhounds are not called Bloodhounds because of blood! The term comes from a closely kept BLOODLINE. Just as one would check out the lineage of a great-great-great grandfather from a ‘family tree’, the genealogical heritage of this dog is traced back to the Egyptians thru BLOODLINES! Since only the aristocracy owned these dogs, a puppy pedigree could be verified by the BLOODLINE. Back in the days of European feudalism (circa, 17th century), this dog was called a BLOODED HOUND; hence the name BLOODHOUND!
►Bloodhounds cannot defend themselves; they do not have a well developed ‘defense mechanism’. Alsatians, when threatened will fiercely growl, bare teeth, bite and bark. A Bloodhound will most likely just stand there trembling and sometimes whimper. This phenomenon is because Bloodhound have always, historically, been cared for by people and have never had to hunt for food for themselves. That is another reason Bloodhounds love people so much! Food!
►Bloodhound ears are cute and useful but often get in the way! It is not unusual for a tracking Bloodhound to step on an ear and tumble over. Since Bloodhound are already truly klutzy, tripping over their ears is really comical!
►This breed of canine physically matures differently from the other breeds. A Bloodhound grows/matures in this order: (1) the bones, the four pillars (legs) on which the heavy skin hangs (2) the skin, starting at four weeks, the wrinkles come and come and.....…… (3) eyes last, no need to see, the heavy furrowed forehead skin closes the eyes when tracking. Bloodhoiunds also do not hear as well as other dogs; the long pendulous ears are not for hearing; the ears are for the drool!
